A Manc`s take on the Barry saga...

Down the East Lancs Road in the Spanish imperial port of Liverpool, Rafael Benitez is apparently seething once again at having been refused the money to buy Gareth Barry.

And who can blame him. Much as we hate to admit it the Scousers are one or two signings away from being a serious force in English football once again.

One of those signings is Gareth Barry - Capello’s first choice for England, bosom buddy of Stevie Me and capable of filling in at three separate positions - central midfield, left midfield and the position he started out in - left back.

A signing which seemed nailed on earlier in the summer now seems dead in the water as the owners refuse to stump up cash that the manager clearly wants desperately.

Rick Parry, Liverpool chief exec said of the situation:

“This is not about questioning the manager’s judgement or the ability of a particular player.

“The owners have clearly demonstrated throughout the year they are willing to back Rafa in the transfer market and will continue to do so.

“It is obviously the selling club’s prerogative to put whatever price they want on the player, but on this occasion Liverpool think the price quoted is too high.”

But £20 million wasn’t too high for a 28 year old striker in Robbie Keane - even though strikers have shorter effective life spans that midfielders.

And, £18 million isn’t too high for David Silva - Liverpool now being rumoured to be ready to challenge United and Barca for the signature of the exciting but unseasoned youngster.

As United fans we can only but hope they hold firm in this foolish policy - not only does it deprive them of a final jigsaw piece (because that’s how important we think Barry could be for them) but it further sows the seeds of discontent between the manager and the management.

All good news then. Enjoy coming third or fourth!

I think he may be speaking too soon,, It seems very hard to believe that barry will not be a liverpool player by the end of the summer.

Lets hope its smokescreens and mirrors. I would really like to see Barry come. It would show unity from the board and also he would be another piece to our fantastic jigsaw.

        The yanks are business men.

They know we are being rolled over price wise.

They know Barry wants to come.

They know if this deal happens it will be on our terms

If Villa drop their price by 30%, the deal will be done, this is all part of the "game"

This is where Parry fails. He has no business acumen.

We should offer around £14m plus Finnan and some add ons. Like apperances, trophies etc etc. It doesn't take much to know that.

            Another Manc's view, sort of...................

Roy Keane: Liverpool can Kop the title if they land Gareth Barry

            By Brian Mcnally, sundaymirror.co.uk 10/08/2008
            Gareth Barry

Seven-TIMES title winner Roy Keane believes Liverpool can propel themselves towards their first Championship since 1990 by capturing Gareth Barry.

The Sunderland boss is not mischief-making. He feels Barry's recruitment could be the final part in Anfield boss Rafa Benitez's jigsaw following his £19million capture of Robbie Keane from Spurs.

There may be a political war raging at Anfield, but Keane is convinced that if Barry joins the Merseysiders they can close last term's 11-point gap on champions Manchester United. Keane said: "If Liverpool get Gareth Barry they will be closer to winning the title.

"With these signings Liverpool are certainly getting closer, but obviously United, Chelsea and Arsenal are the teams they have to catch."

Liverpool failed to win any of their six league games against their main rivals last season and Keane forecasts that pairing Barry with Robbie Keane could help change that unwanted statistic.

He said: "They have to beat the Uniteds, Chelseas and Arsenals to win a trophy.

"They haven't done that in recent seasons - it's as simple as that.

"That's why they have paid £19m for Robbie and are ready to buy again with Gareth Barry.

"They are both very good players and you need these sort of players to win crunch games. That is why they are going for big money."

And Keane fully backs Benitez's willingness to spend big to land Barry and his old Irish international team-mate Keane.

He said: "Trust me, if Liverpool win the league this season they won't look back and say they spent over the odds for Robbie Keane.

"When Chelsea were winning trophies nobody mentioned to Mourinho how much he had spent.

"Of course I would have taken Robbie in a flash. He would certainly bring something to our team - without a shadow of a doubt.

"My job is to get Sunderland into the top six and playing European football so that we can attract the Robbie Keanes of this world."

But Keane is undaunted by facing big-spending Liverpool in Sunderland's opening league fixture on Saturday.

He said: "If you are going to catch people off guard it might be in the first game of the season."

Roy Keane telling us how to buy players. Hmm. That wouldn't be the best thing now, would it?

It seems strange that everybody else in the football world thinks Barry is worth 18m apart from 2 Americans who cant spell football and a few people on here

I think Barry is THE ideal left sided holding player we need. The way Dossena bombs forward, Barry can slot straight in behind at leftback and he can also play left wing. I just think he adds so much more versatility to the squad / team than Xabi I don't understand why people can't see that.

I see it mate, I think we are playing hard ball at the moment and reckon that barry will be a liverpool player come the end of the transfer window even if villa dont move there stance, but i think they will slightly.
